2022 Volkswagen GTI and Golf R Recalled Due to Loose Engine Cover

Volkswagen is recalling 3404 GTIs and 865 Golf Rs from the 2022 model year due to a loose engine cover that could melt and cause a fire.According to the NHTSA, the cover can come loose during "specific driving maneuvers with extremely high accelerating forces.Volkswagen will remove the engine covers from the affected vehicles until a new part is available. The eighth-generation Volkswagen GTI and Golf R went on sale late last year, but the spicy hatchbacks have already had their first recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) ordered a recall for over 4000 units of the 2022 GTI and Golf R on March 16 for an engine cover that could potentially break away and melt if it touches certain sections of the powertrain, increasing the danger of an engine compartment fire.

According to an updated report on March 21, 4269 vehicles are affected: 3404 GTIs and 865 Golf Rs. The engine cover may become unfastened during "particular driving actions with extremely high acceleration forces," which is expected to be common when driving the sporty Volkswagen hatchbacks. The NHTSA advises that if the unfastened cover comes into touch with hot objects beneath the hood, such as the turbocharger, the cover may melt and possibly catch fire. According to the organization, if the cover breaks off from its attachment points, owners may notice a burning odor coming from the engine bay.

Volkswagen has stated that it intends to remove the engine cover from the affected vehicles while it develops a new part. When the upgraded cover is finished, owners will be able to return to the dealership and have it installed for free. Meanwhile, the lack of an engine cover shouldn't have a significant impact on the ownership experience, though the car may sound noisier without the sound deadening that typical engine covers contain. According to the source, Volkswagen will begin producing GTIs and Golf Rs without engine covers in February 2022. Volkswagen will begin sending recall warnings to owners of affected vehicles on May 13.
